How Orange ADU Builders Was Born in Orange

We started Orange ADU Builders in 2013, but the seed was planted a few years earlier on a job site that had gone sideways. A homeowner in the Old Towne district had hired a contractor to convert his detached garage into a rental unit. The framing went up fast. Too fast. By the time we were called in to look at a leak near the roofline, the drywall was already hung and the electrical rough-in had been covered. Nobody wanted to open the walls to trace the problem. The homeowner was out of pocket for work that couldn’t be inspected properly, and the contractor wasn’t returning calls.

We spent two days opening things back up, finding the flashing details that had been skipped, and putting the job back on track. The homeowner didn’t need another estimate. He needed someone to tell him the truth about what was behind his own walls. That job stayed with us. It wasn’t the leak. It was the look on his face when he realized no one else had been willing to be honest with him.

That’s why we started this company in Orange. We wanted to build ADUs the way we’d want one built for our own family – with straight answers, real line-item estimates, and work that passes inspection the first time. No change orders made up on the spot. No hidden framing shortcuts. Just a structure your grandkids can inherit.

Our Founder’s Personal Connection to the ADU Trade

The first building we ever worked on was a garage that hadn’t been touched since the 1960s. The concrete was cracked, the rafters were sagging, and the whole thing smelled like old motor oil and damp wood. We remember the feel of the sawdust in the air that summer – fine and dry, sticking to our arms – and the way the afternoon light came through the gaps in the siding. It wasn’t glamorous work. It was honest work. And something clicked.

Before that, we’d spent years in general construction, taking whatever jobs came along. But ADUs were different. A garage conversion or a backyard unit isn’t just a box. It’s a place where an aging parent can live close by without giving up their independence. It’s where a grown child can save for a first home. It’s rental income that helps a family hold onto a house they love in Orange instead of selling it. That weight is real, and it changes how you frame a wall. You’re not just hanging joists. You’re building someone’s next chapter.

Over the years, we’ve worked on projects across the region – from the foothill communities near Crestline and Wrightwood to the inland valleys around Redlands and Temecula. The terrain changes, the soil changes, the setback requirements change. But the feeling doesn’t. When the final inspection passes and the owner walks through the door for the first time, that’s the moment that gets us up in the morning. If we weren’t doing this, we’d still be working with our hands. Probably restoring old houses, the kind where you can see the marks left by the people who built them a hundred years ago. There’s something about making things that last that we can’t walk away from.

We’ve worked with products like James Hardie siding and Tuff Shed shells on projects where they made sense, and we’ve learned which materials hold up in the hot, dry summers and occasional heavy rains this region gets. That knowledge comes from years of walking sites, not from a catalog. You learn more from a failed flashing detail than from a stack of spec sheets.

Meet Our Team – The Person Behind Every Job

Our founder leads every project personally. He’s on-site for the critical milestones: layout, foundation, framing, and final walkthrough. He didn’t come up through a corporate training program. He learned the trade the old way, working alongside experienced builders who cared more about getting it right than getting it done fast. That means when you ask a question about your roof pitch or your foundation pour, you’re getting an answer from someone who has actually done the work, not someone reading from a script.

Outside of construction, he’s the kind of person who takes things apart just to understand how they work. Cars, old cabinets, door hardware. It drives his family crazy sometimes, but it’s the same curiosity he brings to every ADU. He wants to know why a detail works, not just that it does. That’s the difference between a builder and someone who just manages a project.

When you hire us, you get that. A person who is accountable, reachable, and personally invested in the outcome of your project.

Our Promise to Orange Homeowners

We write estimates the way we’d want to receive them: line by line, with real numbers attached to real work. If the framing package costs a certain amount, you’ll see it. If the plumbing rough-in costs another amount, you’ll see that too. If something changes mid-project, we talk about it before it happens, not after the invoice shows up.

We stand behind the work. If something isn’t right – a settling crack, a door that starts sticking – we come back and make it right. We’ve been doing that since 2013, and it’s not a policy written in a manual. It’s just how we think a business should operate in the city we call home.

Our Credentials

  • State-licensed – Every contractor working under our name is required to hold the license their state requires for the scope of work being performed.
  • Insured & bonded – We carry the coverage homeowners should expect before anyone sets foot on their property.
  • More than a decade of local experience – We’ve been building in Southern California since 2013, long enough to know the inspectors, the soil conditions, and the local building department’s expectations.
  • Strong local reputation – Our business has grown through word of mouth from homeowners across Orange and the surrounding communities.

Here’s why those credentials matter when you’re hiring someone to build on your property. A license means the builder has met a minimum standard set by the state, and the state has a way to hold them accountable. Insurance and bonding protect you if something goes wrong on-site. Local experience means the builder knows what the building department in your city will flag before the plans are even submitted. That saves you time, money, and months of frustration.

Rooted in Orange

We work in Orange because we live here. We drive the same streets, shop at the same stores, and know the difference between a Yorba Street bungalow and a newer development near the hills. Building an ADU in Orange means respecting the character of the neighborhoods – the mature trees, the older homes, the pride people take in their properties. That matters to us because those are the streets we go home to at night.
